Rupert Smith

Rupert Smith is a three time BAFTA-winning and Emmy-nominated director and cinematographer, now based in Fremantle after over two decades working across Los Angeles and London. Across that time, he has built a career spanning high-end commercials and global television, working in every corner of the industry from hard-hitting documentary series and true crime to reality and large-scale entertainment. He works fluidly across multi-camera and single camera formats, and is also an accomplished director of photography. Rupert has extensive experience as a shooting producer-director, comfortable carrying projects from development through to final delivery. He has directed series for Netflix, Amazon, Apple, BBC and National Geographic, shaping stories that work both in the moment and in the edit. His commercial work is grounded in precision and craft, with a strong track record in automotive for brands including BMW, Lexus, Jaguar, Range Rover and Shell. He understands how to balance creative ambition with brand requirements, working closely with agencies and clients to land the idea properly. He is highly experienced working globally, including in extreme and unpredictable environments, and is known for bringing strong storytelling, visual clarity and high production values to every project. On set, that translates to a calm, solutions-first approach that keeps things moving without fuss. As a cinematographer, Rupert brings a director’s eye to everything he shoots. He can step into a director-DP role when needed, keeping productions efficient without compromising the image.
